MADISON, Wis. — Students at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater will soon have the opportunity to major in artificial intelligence as the institution becomes one of the early adopters of AI programs within the UW System.
The new AI major integrates computer science, mathematics, psychology and philosophy to help students build skills for careers in artificial intelligence. The interdisciplinary approach reflects the growing demand for professionals who understand both the technical and ethical aspects of AI technology.
UW System President Jay Rothman said artificial intelligence is already transforming how the system’s 13 universities operate, from classrooms to research labs to administrative offices. A new systemwide initiative aims to expand AI’s impact on students and Wisconsin’s economy.
“It’s in those things that are repetitive, that are rote, that we can now automate and get answers faster and more productively, which allow our human beings who are working either as students or as researchers or as administrators, do more with the time that they have, and that’s what’s exciting about this, because that’s where I think the applications really drive value,” Rothman said.
The UW System is focusing on making students AI literate while maintaining emphasis on critical thinking, ethics and problem-solving skills. This approach addresses concerns about AI’s role in education while preparing students for a workforce increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence technology.
UW-Whitewater’s has assembled an AI working group prior to the 2025-26 academic year to explore the use of generative AI at the school.
