Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced the shutdown of the Dojo supercomputer project in Buffalo.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Tesla CEO Elon Musk has announced the company is shutting down its Dojo supercomputer project, which was expected to play a role at the automaker’s Riverbend facility in Buffalo.

The project’s lead is leaving the company, though Tesla has not provided a specific reason for ending the initiative. Last August, the governor’s office announced — alongside the University at Buffalo’s supercomputer — that Dojo would bring a $500 million investment to Buffalo, positioning the city as a destination for supercomputing.

A spokesperson for Empire State Development told 2 On Your Side, “New York State has not invested in the Dojo super computer project at the Buffalo Gigafactory. As of Feb. 1, Tesla reported investing $314 million in their supercomputer in Buffalo. Any update since that time would have to be addressed to Tesla directly.”

Tesla is also in the midst of renegotiating its lease agreement with New York State for the South Buffalo plant, with its current deal set to expire in the coming years.
