The system, located at the intersection of Brand Road and Coventry Woods Drive, uses artificial intelligence to detect when pedestrians enter the crosswalk.
DUBLIN, Ohio — Dublin has installed an AI-powered lighting system at a crosswalk on Brand Road that automatically illuminates pedestrians as they cross the street at night, officials announced.
The system, located at the intersection of Brand Road and Coventry Woods Drive, uses artificial intelligence to detect when pedestrians enter the crosswalk and activates lights from above to make them more visible to drivers.
“This actually provides almost like a spotlight on that particular person as they cross the crosswalk,” said Marc Dilsaver, transportation program manager for the city of Dublin.
The city selected the location based on feedback from residents who raised concerns about safety at the intersection. Dilsaver said the city determined that improved illumination would enhance safety in the area.
Resident Ron Moreau, who frequently goes for runs and passes through the crosswalk, discovered the new feature by chance several nights ago.
“I saw it maybe a couple nights ago and it happened and like, the light starts shining on me and I’m like, this is kind of a cool feature,” Moreau said.
The installation addresses longstanding safety concerns at the intersection. Moreau said speeding is common in the area, with drivers regularly exceeding the posted limit.
“I’ve had a couple close calls, back in the day I’ve seen some kids with their bikes have a couple close calls as well,” he said.
Moreau praised the new safety measure and called for its expansion.
“Having a light here is great, it just makes sense. I’d like to see it more around the city of Dublin to tell you the truth,” he said.
Dilsaver said so far, there are no official plans to install another system at a different location in the city, but he said it will be considered as they evaluate other locations where safety improvements may be needed.
