If you’re struggling to land a job, it might be because of the computer you’re failing to impress.
Experts said artificial intelligence isn’t just impacting jobs, but also how people are landing them, adding that more employers are using the technology in the hiring process.
Even though you may be dealing with a computer, experts said there are ways to use the human element to stand out. A resume builder study found more than 80 percent of employers are using artificial intelligence to read resumes.
The report also found that companies are using the technology to do candidate assessments, scan their social media, and interact with chatbots. Workforce Solution executive director Juliet Stipeche said even though you may be dealing with a computer, you still want to treat it like a human.
“Folks are going to have to learn to handle themselves,” Stipeche explained. “Dress well, make eye contact, because AI is going to be looking at those soft skills of how they interact.”
Soft skills can also make a difference in landing the job. Recently, the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas looked at how AI is impacting jobs in Texas.
It was found that if you can highlight how you communicate, make eye contact, and use good judgment, it can make a difference.
“Working on your soft skills will make you a more attractive job candidate, especially in fields with a high use of AI, where AI will take all those technical tasks off your plate, and you may be spending more time building those relationships,” senior outreach advisor in Community Engagement and Development at the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, Anna Crockett, explained.
Experts said candidates can use AI too when building a resume.
“I always tell folks, create your first draft with your own words,” Stipeche explained. “Ask AI to polish it. To make it sound like you.”
You can go even further. The technology, they said, can help you prepare for an interview.
“You can ask AI to give you some targeted questions that are customized to the employer, as well as the job posting, so you almost get a prescreening to practice at home with your family,” Stipeche said.
Employers aren’t completely using AI in the hiring process. In fact, our latest ABC13 Who’s Hiring Job Fair with Workforce Solutions will feature several employers who will be doing on-the-spot interviews.
The event takes place at Lone Star College’s Montgomery campus in Conroe. It runs from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. There will be employers there, mainly in the healthcare and biomedical industries.
