PORTLAND (WGME) — Governor Janet Mills calls the use of AI in political attack ads “absolutely wrong.”
A new ad targets her Democratic rival in the U.S. Senate race, Graham Platner.
It’s made by a Senate Republican PAC.
The ad uses deepfake video and audio to generate a shirtless Platner reading some of his old, controversial Reddit posts.
Platner says it’s a sign of the times, and sign AI needs to be regulated.
“It’s absolutely wrong to use made up images, I think,” Mills said. “And to portray people in a nasty, mean way.”

The Collins campaign says, “Senator Collins believes AI-generated ads should be clearly labeled and should not be materially deceptive.”
